Bodh Gaya is considered the most sacred Buddhist shrine in the world, attracting thousands of tourists each year to meditate and pray with the resident monks. The focal point of this pilgrimage site is the impressive Mahabodhi Temple, which is built next to the place where Buddha enlightened and formulated the philosophy of life. The temple was built in the 6th century and has since been restored many times. There is a beautiful pyramidal spire at the top with a huge golden Buddha statue.
Also of interest is the Bodhi tree at this location. It is a descendant of the original Bodhi tree where the Buddha meditated for 7 days after enlightenment. It is said to be one of the oldest and most respected trees in the world (you'll see I know you already found it when you found the red sandstone slab that marked the location).
