The romantic city of Shillong is one of the most important tourist attractions in the northeast. Location

Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya State, located in the eastern part of the state. History

Shillong was a small village until 1864 when it became the new civil station for the Kasi and Jaindia Mountains. It has been the summer capital of East Bengal and Assam for many years. In 1874, Assam was established as the Chief Commissioner of the province and was chosen as the capital of the new government. An earthquake in 1897 destroyed the city and it was necessary to rebuild it completely. In January 1972, Shillong became the capital of the newly established Meghalaya state.
