Situated at an elevation of 1,353m in the Western Ghats, it is one of the most popular hill stations in India and one of the most visited places in Maharashtra.
This beautiful hill station is often called the Queen's Hill Station of Maharashtra. It is one of the most popular attractions near Kolhapur, Pune and Mumbai. Mahabaleshwar today was born in 1829-30 when it became the summer capital of the President of Mumbai during the British rule. He was previously known as Malcolm Peth, and the first mention of Mahabaleshwar in history dates back to 1215 AD, when King Singhan of Devgiri visited the old Mahabaleshwar. He built a small temple and a water tank at the source of the Krishna River. In the 16th century, the Malata family of Chandarao ruled the city. In the late 17th century, Shivaji Maharaj took over Jaoli and Mahabaleshwar, who built the Pratapgarh Fort in 1656 AD. The city has also witnessed the footprints of the British, including destinations in the territory of Satara Raja in 1819.

Mahabaleshwar is the source of the Krishna River, which flows through the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The legendary source of the river is the spikes that emerged from the mouth of a bull statue in the Panch Ganga Temple in Old Mahabaleshwar. Four other rivers also flow from here and then join Krishna; they are Koyana, Venna (Veni), Savitri and Gayatri.

Satara is the nearest railway starting point, about 60 kilometers from Mahabaleshwar. It comes from Goa, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Hubli, Kochi, Kolhapur, Tirunelveli, Mysore, Pondicherry, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Gorakh Trains in Bur, Ajmer and Jodhpur. Mahabaleshwar is connected by roads to Mumbai, Pune, Satara, Bangalore, Goa and Shidi.

Mahabaleshwar has a mild climate throughout the year and can be visited all year round. However, the best time is from June to October.
